Health Insurance is Mandatory in Dubai — and Often Insufficient
Since 2016, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) mandates health insurance for all Dubai residents without exception. This law applies to employees, spouses and dependent children.
In theory, your employer must provide coverage. In practice, the minimum DHA coverage has significant gaps for expats:
- ❌ Valid only in the UAE — no coverage when you travel to Europe or elsewhere
- ❌ Low reimbursement caps (often AED 150,000–300,000)
- ❌ Limited clinic network, often not the best addresses in Dubai
- ❌ Medical repatriation not included
- ❌ Rarely covers the whole family optimally
⚠️ Important: If you travel home to Europe and fall ill, your DHA employer insurance covers nothing. You are entirely on your own.
Medical Costs in Dubai: A Harsh Reality Without Good Coverage
Dubai is one of the most expensive destinations in the world for medical care. Private hospitals and clinics — often excellent — charge rates that can come as a shock.
| Type of care | Estimated cost (AED) | Estimated cost (€) |
|---|---|---|
| GP consultation | AED 200–500 | €50–135 |
| Specialist consultation | AED 500–1,500 | €135–400 |
| CT scan / MRI | AED 1,500–4,000 | €400–1,080 |
| Private hospital night | AED 2,000–8,000 | €540–2,150 |
| Childbirth (normal) | AED 15,000–35,000 | €4,000–9,450 |
| Emergency surgery | AED 30,000–100,000+ | €8,100–27,000+ |
💡 Good to know: Top private clinics in Dubai (American Hospital, Mediclinic, Cleveland Clinic) often only accept patients with recognised insurance. Having international coverage gives you access to the best facilities.
Dubai Expat Neighbourhoods: Where Do You Live?
Dubai is a city of contrasts. Depending on your neighbourhood, accessible clinics and prices vary. Here are the main expat areas:
Dubai Golden Visa: What Health Insurance Do You Need?
The Dubai Golden Visa (5 or 10-year long-term residency) is increasingly popular with investors, entrepreneurs and wealthy retirees. Health insurance is essential to obtain and maintain it.
Golden Visa holders have specific needs:
- ✅ Worldwide coverage (frequent travel between Dubai, Europe, Asia)
- ✅ High guarantees (no cap or very high cap)
- ✅ Fast access to the best private clinics
- ✅ Dental and optical options included
- ✅ Whole family coverage available
✅ Our Golden Visa recommendation: MSH International (World or First Expat plan) and April My Health International are the two best options for Dubai Golden Visa holders. Worldwide coverage, high limits, French-speaking service.
Freelancers & Digital Nomads in Dubai: Are You Covered?
Dubai has become a major destination for freelancers and digital nomads, notably thanks to the Dubai Freelance Visa. But these profiles often have insufficient coverage:
- No employer insurance → 100% your responsibility
- Often temporary status → need for flexible insurance
- Frequent travel → international coverage essential
April My Travel Cover is ideal for stays up to 12 months. For a longer stay, MSH Neo Tempo or April My Health International offer the best long-term protection.
